Why do I need this medicine?
Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B and poliomyelitis vaccine helps protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b and polio infections.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that mainly affects the airways causing difficulty in breathing. It can also cause heart and nerve problems.

Tetanus is a serious infection that is acquired when bacteria from soil infect deep wounds. It causes painful and serious muscle spasms.

Pertussis or whooping cough is a very contagious bacterial infection that mainly affects the airways causing severe coughing (often characterised to have a “whooping” sound) and difficulty in breathing. It can also cause ear, lung and brain problems.

Haemophilus influenzae type b is a bacterial infection that can cause several serious illnesses including brain, heart, lung, blood, bones, joints or eye problems.

Poliomyelitis is a viral infection that can cause crippling.
How do I use this medicine?
Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B and poliomyelitis vaccine is given by intramuscular (into the muscle) injection.

A doctor or nurse will administer this vaccine for your child.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that your child do not miss any immunisations.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your child’s doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use this vaccine if your child ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B and poliomyelitis vaccine, neomycin, polymyxin, streptomycin.

Alert the doctor if your child has the following conditions:
  • history of brain or nerve problems a week after immunisation against pertussis infection
  • uncontrolled brain or nerve disease
as this vaccine may not be suitable for him/her.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform the doctor if your child has the following conditions:
  • family history of fits or seizures
  • history of Guillain-Barre syndrome (an immune disorder that affects the nerves) after immunisation against tetanus infection
  • history of having a high fever, collapsing, inconsolable crying or experiencing fits or seizures 2-3 days after immunisation against pertussis infection
  • weak immune system
  • serious illness or infection accompanied by fever
  • bleeding disorder
Be sure to inform the doctor or pharmacist if your child is born prematurely.

If your child is going for any laboratory test, inform the doctor that he/she was recently immunised with Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B and poliomyelitis vaccine.
What side effects could I experience?
Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B and poliomyelitis vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: restlessness, weakness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, rashes, injection site reactions including redness, pain or swelling.

Brief fainting spells can happen after vaccination. Sitting or lying down for about 15 minutes after a vaccination can help prevent fainting and injuries caused by falls.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert the doctor quickly if your child experience any of the following:
  • signs and symptoms of allergic reactions e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes
  • high fever, collapsing, inconsolable crying, fits or seizures
Inform the doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if your child experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if your child is taking any of these medicines:
  • blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin
  • high-dose anti-inflammatory medicine e.g. prednisone
  • medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. belimumab
Always notify the doctor and pharmacist if your child is taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Protect from light. Light may cause the medication to lose some of its effectiveness.

Keep away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
